The earliest documents that mention Cap d'Ail appear back in the fifteenth century. But the history of this small town, after many changes of fortune with various local powers, is intimately linked to that of its neighbor, Monaco.
Cap d'Ail has never asserted a maritime vocation, even if the l'anse de La Mala has been used several times as discreet shelter for the galleys that came pouring in with their armed men in attacks of the Principality.
It was not until 1880, when the road from Nice to Monte Carlo opend, that Cap d'Ail really took off. Along with other resorts of the Côte d'Azur that opend up to luxury tourism during the Belle Epoque period.
This link with Monaco has continued to strengthen the port of Cap d'Ail. The port area and the 220 000 m² dam of Fontvieille were both created out of nothing.More information about the town of Monaco Other ports near Cap d'Ail
